Uniting Hamilton's Black Community Since 1979
The Afro Canadian Caribbean Association (ACCA) was established in 1979 to unite Hamilton's Black communities. Founded by Collin Hall, a Jamaican immigrant with a vision to bring together Hamiltonians of Afro Caribbean and Afro Canadian backgrounds, ACCA has grown into a cornerstone of community life.
From youth mentorship and civic education to seniors support and cultural programming, ACCA continues to provide a space to belong — and the freedom to discover one's sense of self while honouring community history.
Fighting for Justice Since 1988
The Black Action Defence Committee (BADC) was founded in Toronto in 1988 in response to the killing of Lester Donaldson — one in a series of police shootings of Black men that demanded action. Founded by Dudley Laws, Charles Roach, Sherona Hall, and Lennox Farrell, BADC became the leading voice for Black justice in the city.
Among its greatest achievements, BADC was primarily responsible for the creation of Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) — the first independent civilian oversight body for police in Canada. Their work laid the groundwork for the justice movements that continue today.
